“Thank you Chinese doctors! Thank you First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University!” During the May Day holiday, a banner of gratitude was presented to the South Branch of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University. Amir (alias), a Pakistani postdoctoral fellow at Anhui University, warmly thanked the medical team. He had just experienced a “reboot” of his life—on April 12, he suffered sudden cardiac arrest at home and lost consciousness. He was rushed to the South Branch of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, where after 19 days of multidisciplinary rescue involving the Emergency Department, ICU, and Cardiology, he was successfully brought out of danger and stabilized.
At around 10:00 on April 12, Amir suddenly went into respiratory and cardiac arrest at his home in Hefei. At about 10:50, he was rushed to the South Branch Emergency Department. The hospital immediately activated its green channel and expedited every step. The emergency team performed one hour of continuous CPR, after which Amir regained a spontaneous heart rhythm but still suffered severe hemodynamic instability and malignant arrhythmias. He was transferred to the ICU (Department 3) for further resuscitation. Upon arrival in the ICU, Amir’s heart rhythm remained extremely unstable and required high-dose vasopressors. The medical staff continued resuscitation efforts and consulted the ECMO team for a comprehensive assessment. With the family’s consent, they proceeded with emergency extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). The hospital attached great importance to his case and convened multiple departmental consultations. Five days later, under ECMO support, Amir was transferred to the catheterization lab, where the Cardiology team performed coronary angiography under general anesthesia. The results revealed a severe myocardial bridge in the mid left anterior descending artery, with 90% systolic narrowing. The procedure went smoothly. Postoperatively, ECMO was successfully withdrawn, and two days later, he was weaned off mechanical ventilation. Thanks to the meticulous care of the medical team, Amir gradually regained consciousness, his limb movements returned to normal, and his vital signs stabilized. On April 21, he was transferred to the Cardiology Department for continued treatment and was discharged in recovery on May 1.
