On December 27th, Anhui Ophthalmic Hospital was officially unveiled and began operations at the South District of the Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province (111 Huangshan Road, Hefei). This provincial specialized hospital was built on the foundation of the ophthalmic cooperation project between the Chinese and Cuban governments, and it is the first comprehensive provincial-level ophthalmic specialized hospital in Anhui Province.

The Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province is a tertiary Grade A comprehensive hospital directly under the Anhui Provincial Health Commission. It houses the Anhui Ophthalmic Hospital (China-Cuba Friendship Ophthalmology Hospital). It originated from the Anhui China-Cuba Friendship Ophthalmic Center, which is a medical cooperation project between China and Cuba. It has a prominent advantage in ophthalmology specialization. Since its official operation in 2011, a total of five batches consisting of 27 Cuban experts have worked at the hospital in ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment, serving more than 500,000 patients and performing over 30,000 surgeries. Currently, there are four Cuban ophthalmic specialists working at the hospital, including one pediatric ophthalmology specialist, one neuro-ophthalmology specialist, one cataract glaucoma specialist, and one optometrist.

"In response to the Belt and Road Initiative, we have carried out ophthalmic cooperation between China and Cuba. In these 12 years, we have witnessed the deep friendship between China and Cuba, as well as the rapid development of our hospital's ophthalmology department," said Shi Lei, Vice President of the Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province. The hospital not only has high-level experts and professors from Cuba but also has its own high-quality expert team to provide professional, comprehensive, advanced, and attentive ophthalmic services to the people of Anhui.

In the future, Anhui Ophthalmic Hospital (China-Cuba Friendship Ophthalmology Hospital) will expand its service area, taking the responsibility of safeguarding the eye health of the people. It aims to become a high-level ophthalmic medical center, focusing on comprehensive eye health services, enhancing the level of ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment, improving the capability to diagnose and treat complex eye diseases, expanding high-quality ophthalmic medical resources in China-Cuba cooperation, and striving to build itself into a regional eye health service hub integrating medical, teaching, research, optical services, and China-Cuba friendly cooperation.
