On April 2, reporters learned from the Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences that the National Agro-Technical Center recently officially released the list of confirmed varieties for super rice in 2025. The "Hui Liangyou 985," jointly selected and bred by the Rice Research Institute of the Academy and Anhui WIN-ALL HI-TECH Seed Co., Ltd., was successfully included as one of the thirteen new super rice varieties added this year. This follows the naming of "Hui Liangyou 996" as a super rice variety in 2016, marking another national super rice variety independently bred in our province in nearly a decade. This new rice variety passed the provincial variety approval in Anhui in 2017 and the national variety approval in 2021. It is suitable for planting as a single mid-season rice crop in areas with light occurrences of rice blast disease across the Yangtze River basin in Hubei (excluding Wuling Mountain area), Hunan (excluding Wuling Mountain area), Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, as well as in the central rice area of Zhejiang, the northern rice area of Fujian, and the southern rice area of Henan. Since its demonstration and extension in 2017, "Hui Liangyou 985" has been promoted across 6 million mu (approximately 400,000 hectares) of acreage, thanks to its high and stable yield characteristics, making it one of the main cultivars in the single-season rice-growing areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In 2023 and 2024, it broke the record for high yield over large, contiguously planted areas, fully demonstrating its high yield potential. On October 24, 2024, entrusted by the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs organized experts to conduct a super rice yield test and acceptance for "Hui Liangyou 985," which was selectively bred by the Rice Research Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The expert group inspected a hundred-mu demonstration plot of "Hui Liangyou 985" in Muchang Town, Jin'an District, Lu'an City. According to the yield testing methods recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs for super rice, three representative plots were randomly selected for mechanical harvesting and actual cutting yield tests, with an average yield of 843.9 kilograms per mu, meeting the standards for super rice. "Hui Liangyou 985" has shown outstanding performance in disease resistance, lodging resistance, and tolerance to extreme climates. It is moderately resistant to rice blast and sheath blight, resistant to rice grain discoloration, and has significant adaptability to high and low temperatures. Through the combination of good varieties and good practices, "Hui Liangyou 985" has been promoted in conjunction with water-saving and disaster-avoidance cultivation techniques, green and organic production methods, etc. It has optimized the management of fertilizer and water as well as the integrated control system for pests and diseases. The variety performs excellently in reducing pesticide use and irrigation requirements, conforming to the development trend of green agriculture. Additionally, the combination of mechanized harvesting and simplified cultivation techniques has further reduced production costs.
