On December 19th, a photography enthusiast unexpectedly captured several waterbirds with crown feathers on their heads on the surface of the lake at Mushan Island Scenic Area in Chaohu Lake, Anhui Province. After confirmation, these birds were identified as Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus), a national second level protected species. This is the first sighting of Great Crested Grebes at Mushan Island Scenic Area. Observations reveal that the prominent crown feathers on the heads of Great Crested Grebes are eye-catching. They occasionally submerge into the water and playfully flap their wings while swimming. Although Great Crested Grebes have wings, they are not skilled at flying. Diving is their specialty. They swiftly plunge their heads into the water, and when they resurface, a small fish can be seen in their beaks. Great Crested Grebes are aquatic birds with slender necks and the largest body size among grebe species. They typically measure around 50 centimeters in length and primarily feed on fish. They inhabit open plains, lakes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, and marshy areas. They particularly favor lakes and ponds with abundant aquatic vegetation and fish. They can also be found in mountainous lake and pond areas. Crested Grebes are not commonly seen on vast water surfaces like Chaohu Lake. This is attributed to the comprehensive 10-year fishing ban in Chaohu Lake, which has led to an increase in the lake's ecological environment and fish species. It reflects the remarkable achievements of Chaohu Lake's aquatic ecosystem management.
